me, after clearing my schedule to write:

uhhhh it was raining… and dark (and also night) and um… cold i guess?? anyway, something dramatic~ happened

me, stuck in traffic on my way to work:

Rain tumbled through midnight leaves, casting the forest in liquid moonlight. A low growl shook the horizon. Death had come.

everyone is always acting like there is some crisis of human interaction with one another because everyone is overly sensitive to how strangers approach them and like. no actually its because nobody has any fucking manners. social etiquette has legitimately vanished. it makes interacting with strangers miserable because people don’t know how to fucking behave in public.

like it is rude to stare. it is rude to point. it is rude to have a loud phone conversation in a quiet place. it’s rude to listen to music or videos or whatever on your device with no headphones on a loud volume, or at any volume in an enclosed or quiet space. these are rude things to do. like i’m sorry while some etiquette is silly, an acceptable level of decorum is necessary to make existing in public bearable for everybody…….it is LITERALLY common courtesy

Also, do not fucking photograph or film people without their consent!

    Useful information

    [VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

“All your tests/labs came back clear! Isn’t that great?”

American healtcare is a business, and you are the customer. Here’s something you can say:

“It’s great that we ruled out X, Y, and Z with these tests. However, I’m still having these symptoms, and they’re effecting my daily life in these specific ways. So what’s next on your list of differential diagnoses?”

And if that doesn’t get you anywhere, you can say something like:

“Okay, we’ve ruled out all of the common causes for my symptoms. So when do we start exploring more rare explanations?”

And if that still gets you nowhere, you’re going to document their refusal to do further testing in your chart, because they don’t want to have to put that in writing. Keep going, you’re worth it. I love you, mean.

    END VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION.]

do you know much about PCOS? every doctor and gyno i’ve seen hasn’t given me any answers other than the fact that i have it.

well. I have no idea if I have the information you’re looking for, because I don’t know what that is, but I hope the Cleveland Clinic here has some useful information.

    Okay, someone hold my beer.

    1) there are 2 types of PCOS, strictly hormonal and Insulin Resistant PCOS. You should ask your doctor which of these you have, because insulin resistant needs a little more attention to not harm you and will probably require some diet changes

    2) a lot of doctors dont really know what to do with you when you have PCOS because it is wildly understudied. There is an overlap in symptoms and/or occurrences with other syndromes related, like endometriosis. You should make sure you dont have one of these also or instead of, because they are wildly different.

    3) everyone will make your problem about your fertility since people with PCOS typically have trouble conceiving. If this is something that concerns you let them at it, but if having kids isn’t your priority make sure to pester them about the symptoms that DO bother you. (I was only 16 when I first had it brought up to me and the first thing they assured me was I would have to change my lifestyle to have kids one day. its gross but we must contend with it)

    4) hormonal only PCOS is usually treated with horomonal birth control. If being on the pill is bad for you via gender or side effects. You do not HAVE to be on hormonal birth control because it is just symptom relief. If the body hair/weight gain/other symptoms of pcos dont bother you, dont let the doctors pressure you into it

    5) there is some community debate if PCOS is an intersex disorder or not. It doesn’t have any outward/genital variations, but it increases testosterone production in AFAB people pretty significantly. Whether or not you identify with that is a personal choice, no matter what loud people on the internet say. And if you’re genderqueer or trans, congrats on the free testosterone

    6) insulin resistant version makes you body…. resistant to insulin. No it is not the same as diabetes– taking shots of insulin wont help near as much because your body doesnt like to process it.

    7) PCOS is just a last-couple-of-decades disease, so very little is studied about it so far. Things have changed about it even just since I was a teen. Doing your own research is going to be vital, since even ObGYN docs tend to just shrug and hand you birth control. Theoretically having your ovaries removed may fix the problem completely, but most docs hedge hugely to admit it

    8) if you do use horomonal birth control and it just gives you more painful periods, I (from anecdotal talk admittedly) find that it usually means you have uterine fibroids or endometriosis or something also or instead of. PCOS can also make you more susceptible to ovarian cancer, so getting checked is unfortunately important

I think that’s everything I can think of off the top of my head that isn’t usually in medical websites

damn good job have a second beer on me

Can confirm much of this. Just to add to #4, hormonal BC can involve estrogen, which made me (TMI) regular as a clock, like down to the minute, but came with a heightened risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Also, depression. After a couple of years, for those reasons, I was moved to a progesterone-only mini pill; less regular, but overall working well to this day. So you do have options you can ask about—or, of course, not do any hormonal BC at all.

I’m also on Spironolactone, a testosterone/aldosterone blocker. This is another option. Mostly, it’s a diuretic and water goes straight through me. Otherwise, I haven’t had any problems.

I’d never heard before that PCOS has any intersex connotations, but in fairness, Spironolactone is also used in feminizing hormone therapy (I hope this is the right term?), so I can see that. I’m AFAB, a cis woman as far as I’m concerned, it is what it is, not worried about it. Whatever treatment works for you and you feel comfortable with, if you can find a doctor who will talk it out, go with that.

    trash-and-trash-accessories:

I know SEVERAL afab nonbinary people who, as soon as they came out as nonbinary - immediately began dressing in ridiculous hyper-femme outfits they never would have worn before.  A lot of people see this and say shit like “Theyfab” or say they are only nonbinary for attention.  After all, look how femme they are.

But to me, this makes perfect sense.  When you are forced into the category of “woman” against your will, femininity is a chore.  It’s a job that you have.  As soon as you say no, I’m not a woman, suddenly femininity isn’t your job anymore.  It’s not a requirement.  It’s just a fun hobby you can get into.  Or a little treat sometimes.

when someone says “why would you want a physical copy of that? you can just stream it” i physically recoil. a feeling of dread comes over me like an evil spirit just passed through my body

THIS. There are so many good reasons for owning physical copies of media (be it books, DVDs, CDs etc).

    • They look nice on the shelf and give your apartment a personality. There are stunning editions of books and pretty box sets of tv shows and movies. When I come into an apartment with no books/individual art/music/movies on display I always wonder what these people do all day. Don’t they have any interests? Stuff they want to interact with or just look at?
    • Physical copies can’t be taken away from you on a whim by corporations for tax writeoffs or shit like that. I have DVDs of shows that can’t currently be streamed anywhere. Contrary to that, I’m unable to watch the Swedish HBO adaptation of Beartown anywhere because it’s literally impossible to access in my country (just release a DVD ffs!)
    • You only have to pay once for a physical copy, no ongoing payments every month (works perfectly for someone like me who watches like two tv shows a year and loves to rewatch the same things over and over again).

Or water fountains, public washrooms, outdoors tables, etc, etc

Notice how removing seating doesnt actually prevent people from sitting it just makes them uncomfortable and makes public spaces more hostile it doesnt actually work at controlling their behavior not till a pig comes along anyways and they’ll harass a homeless person/teen whatever they’re sitting on.
